Matriculants from Breede River have once again achieved outstanding results during the 2016 examinations.

Together, the class of 2016 managed a collective average of 88,4% which is above the district and province average. De La Bat, Drostdy Technical High, Hexvallei High, Langerug School and the Pionier School have all achieved a 100% pass rate.

Four candidates of the Pionier School received A’s for Afrikaans First Additional Language (Tawanda Mutasa, Sarel van der Westhuizen, Tomley van Vuuren, Tayla Kuilders).

One student, Tawanda Mutasa, has 4 A’s and was invited to an awards ceremony hosted by Western Cape Premier, Helen Zille, taking place today (Thursday 12 January). He received A symbols for Afrikaans First Additional Language, History, English and Business Studies.

Tawanda’s achievements are particularly remarkable because he is an immigrant from Zimbabwe. He came to South Africa and could not speak a word of Afrikaans.

Deputy Principal of Pionier School, Hannes Byleveldt said that they are ecstatic with the results which the eight matriculants achieved. “It was a huge effort by the educators who ensured excellent planning and did not sit around and wait for the learners to come to them with problems,” said Byleveldt.

Support of the Department of Education, sponsors and funds for books played a major role for 2016

It is important to acknowledge the grade R teachers as well because that it where it all starts if it was not for them. It is not a one year effort but a 12 year effort.

In the Witzenberg Municipality; Bella Vista, Charlie Hofmeyer, Skurweberg and Wolseley Secondary showed significant improvements with Tulbagh High School the only school to achieve a 100% pass rate in the district.

Principal of Langerug High School in Worcester for children with special needs, Cecile de Villiers said “We rejoice and are grateful that as a new school we could help our students to reach their full potential for the second consecutive year. We are proud to be well equipped and send empowered students to adulthood. Teamwork, support and hard work by students, parents, teachers and therapists all played an important role.

The school always tries to believe in students and their potential by empowering their skills so that they can manage their needs themselves.
