What was meant to be a celebratory day for Zwelethemba High School’s first group of matriculants was a rather sombre one, as only 41% of the group passed.
However, for Akho Mbana and her family it was a day of jubilation as she was the top matriculant in the new school’s matric class, ending with an average of 70,4%.
The triumphant achiever has now set her sights on furthering her studies in accountancy.
Speaking on her success she says: “There are two factors I credit for my success, my hard work and continuous dedication to my school work. I believe these two factors have really contributed towards my success.”
And, through it all, her teachers and family have been her biggest inspiration.
Owing to the fact that she, along with the rest of the class of 2021, had to study through a pandemic it was inevitable Akho’s studies would be affected. “The lockdown affected my studying in a negative way because I had to adjust to online learning, which was a bit of a challenge for me since I was used to contact learning. I also had to study on my own, which was also a challenge as I was used to study groups, which helped me perform better.”
