The past Saturday Brandvlei Correctional Services hosted Hex Valley Landelike Cricket Club in a T20 cricket game sanctioned by the Boland Cricket Board.
The prison wardens were asked to bat first and even though it was at a slow rate, they managed not to lose any wickets during the power play. That was until veterans Jean Amsterdan (4/15) and Garnet Wagenstroom (4/13) were introduced into the bowling attack, and started the downfall of the hosts, which managed to struggle to a total of 91 all out in 20 overs.
With serious spin (Amsterdam) and immaculate line and length bowling (Wagenstroom) the veterans had the prison wardens in shambles, and only captain Sheldon George showed some resistance.
Hex Valley started well with openers Kurt Claasen and Jacques Amsterdam putting up a solid partnership for the first wicket. It was winning captain Apollis Dempers (28 not out) who steered the ship to safe waters and a convincing win for his team. The visiting team managed to get the target in 17 overs with the loss of only 4 wickets, hence securing an impressive victory with 6 wickets.
V The last game of the season for Hex Valley will be on 19 February when they will host Tulbagh CC.
