The police in Montagu is warning residents of an online scam, with four cases being opened in two days. Thousands of rands have been lost.

“The public is warned to be vigilant of an online scam that falsely uses the name of Swagbucks, a legitimate online rewards platform, to trick people into paying deposits,” said WO Suria Meyer.

“Community members have reported receiving offers for so-called “online jobs” where individuals are promised small payments for watching video clips. After some initial interactions, the fraudsters demand deposits or payments before participants can supposedly withdraw their earnings.”

She said that the real Swagbucks does not require deposits or advance payments for participation.

“Never pay money upfront for online jobs or rewards. Verify any offer directly on the official Swagbucks website before engaging,” said WO Meyer. She encouraged residents to report suspicious activity to the relevant authorities.
