The iconic Montagu mountain sign received a fresh layer of paint recently, thanks to a dedicated group of 17 residents.

Despite the light drizzle and the steep, rocky climb, excitement and energy were in no short supply as the volunteers worked together to refresh one of the town’s most recognisable landmarks.

The initiative, sparked by Johan Olivier and Freddie Engelbrecht, quickly turned into a proud community collaboration. Armed with paint, brushes and plenty of enthusiasm, the group trekked up the mountain through thick bush and rocky terrain, determined to make the white stone letters shine once more.

They morning’s hard work paid off and by the afternoon the new, brightened Montagu rock sign proclaimed the town’s name once again proudly and clearly.

“This effort perfectly captures the Montagu spirit,” said Mareletta Mundey, manager of Montagu-Ashton Tourism, “people coming together, working hard and making their town a little brighter, quite literally. A heartfelt thank you goes out to everyone who contributed, from the volunteers to the generous sponsors who helped make this project possible.”
