Outstanding pass for 2018 matric class

Breede River Valley matriculants once again outdid themselves in 2018, and achieved great results. The National Senior Certificate (NSC) examination results were released on Friday 4 January.

Western Cape MEC for Education Debbie Schäfer was pleased with the performance of learners in the Western Cape. “I would like to congratulate the 81,5% of learners in the Western Cape who passed the 2018 NSC examination,” she said. A total of 41 350 matriculants passed in the province. Schäfer said she is especially proud that the Western Cape achieved an increase in the percentage of bachelor’s passes, with 42,3% of learners achieving this quality pass. This is an increase of 3,2% from 2017, an increase in the number of candidates achieving this from 19 101 in 2017 to 21 492 in 2018.

In Worcester the schools showed remarkable improvement. De La-Bat, Langerug and Pionier School achieved 100% pass rates. Lisa Marie van Wyk from Pionier School received an award for excellence, despite barriers to learning, at the 2018 NSC awards ceremony at Leeuwenhof on Thursday 10 January. She is third in the country for her performance at a school for Special Needs Education.

The top three at Langerug School are, Etienne le Roux (first place), Riana Mouton (second place) and Corné Olivier (third place).

Worcester Gymnasium achieved a 95,2% pass. The school boasts 18 A-aggregate candidates and 200 subject distinctions. The school’s top three are Hans Klüsmann with an average of 94,14%, Shakeera Williams with a 91,85% average and Nelia Globbelaar with an average of 91%. All three obtained seven distinctions.

Drostdy HTS achieved a pass rate of 99,4%, which is an improvement on the 98.9% of 2017. The top three candidates are, Corli Ramsauer (92,4%), Yvette van der Walt (87,4%) and Ané Brink (87,3%). The school was awarded the best technical school in the province at the NSC awards ceremony.

Montana High School achieved a 98,6% pass rate. Esselenpark Secondary School achieved a 60,8% pass. Brandvlei Youth Centre achieved a 80% pass.

Breërivier High School achieved a 67,7% pass, a decline on the 85,4% pass rate in 2017.

The top three there are Regan Valentine, Shanique Steenberg and Malcolm Baadjies.

Vusisizwe Secondary School achieved a 73% pass and improved well compared to the 66% pass rate in 2017. Worcester Secondary School (WSS) achieved a 67,5% pass. Catherine Witbooi is the top achiever at WSS. She obtained three distinctions and an average of 78,3%.

The schools in Ceres also performed well. Ceres Secondary School achieved a 76,5% pass rate, which is an improvement on the 70,7% in 2017 and the 66% pass in 2016. The school was also one of 10 schools recognised at the NSC awards ceremony as the most improved public schools in the province.

Bella Vista High School in Ceres achieved a 70,7% pass, an improvement of the 54,9% pass in 2017.

Charlie Hofmeyr High School achieved a 97,3% pass. Jannike van Wyk received an award at the NSC awards ceremony for obtaining the highest mark in physical sciences in the province. She is also the dux learner at the school, with an A-aggregate of 94,9%.

Ingcinga Zethu School achieved a 60,2% pass rate.

The schools in Tulbagh also achieved pass rates above 50%. Tulbagh High School achieved a 87,9% pass and Waveren Secondary School achieved a 62,1% pass.

In De Doorns the matriculants didn’t stray from the path. Hexvallei High School achieved a 82,9% pass.

Hexvallei Secondary School achieved a 85,3% pass, an outstanding improvement compared to the 65,1% pass in 2017. The school boasts 28 bachelor passes.

The top achiever at the school is Duncan Carolus. He obtained two distinctions.

Van Cutsum Combined School achieved a 61,1% pass.

In Villiersdorp, De Villiers Graaff High School achieved a 97,6% pass and Villiersdorp Secondary School achieved a 84% pass.

Wolseley Secondary School achieved a 70% pass. De Kruine Secondary School in Touws River achieved a 73,5% pass, while Goudini High School in Rawsonville achieved a 73,5% pass.
