Parents urged to turn in school vandals

The Department of Basic Education is urging parents and the community to turn in vandals of schools to the police.

The department says it is deeply concerning that a total of 32 incidents of vandalism of schools were reported in the Western Cape over the December holiday.

This is 11 more incidents compared to the same period of the previous year.

The damage amounts to more than R500 000 and counting, says the department.

“The damage caused by heartless vandals has a direct effect on the education of learners, as they will now not be able to access critical facilities to ensure that learning takes place,” says Basil Kivedo, DA spokesperson for education in the Western Cape.

Funds that should be used to build new infrastructure must now be allocated to repairing the schools that were damaged.

Kivedo says partnerships with the police and community to stop these acts will continue.
