The Golden Valley Casino donated R16 000 to supply 160 care packs for Grade 2 learners from Esselen Park Primary school.

Each child received a care pack from the casino containing a reading book, an activity book, a mask, soap, juice and a snack.

Explaining Golden Valley’s involvement, General Manager Keenan Bergins said many of the learners’ parents are reliant on seasonal jobs for an income. “This is an age when young children need to be exposed to books but both parents and the school have limited resources, so it is up to the private sector to assist. Some children only read one or two books a year but for literacy levels to improve they need to be reading up to 50 books at this time. It’s our hope that the book we have given them sparks their imagination and a love of reading and learning.”
