Clean lines and a serene atmosphere are not phrases normally used to describe a road-side service station . . . until you turn off to the new Ultra City Breede Valley, on either side of the N1.
Newly built just outside Worcester, the twin developments arguably redefine taking a break along the road.
The Breede Valley’s brand-new set of Ultra Cities have been open since December last year.
The contemporary architecture, modern interior design and fittings, a relaxing courtyard with panoramic views and five-star toilet facilities, is certain to help establish it as a favourite among locals and long-distance drivers alike.
Having been almost 100% Boland-built, the service stations are an excellent example of local being “lekker”. Much of the design is inspired by the region – from the local stone rolled into the cement floor and words and sayings engraved in Braille onto furnishings, to the vineyard-like pagodas surrounding the courtyard.
The architect’s near obsession with framing the exceptional mountain views extends even to the restrooms, where the men in particular enjoy arguably one of the best comfort-break views in the country!
“Our goal was to create a filling station that was a destination,” said chief architect Derrek Lubbe.
The two Ultra Cities include the country’s first Spur Grill & Go and Spar Express stores, as well as Worcester’s first Vida e Caffè – all firm favourites among South African consumers.
