The top matriculant from Vusisizwe Secondary School in Zwelethemba, Worcester, received not one, not two, not three, but an admirable six distinctions in her final examinations in 2020.
She achieved these distinctions in isiXhosa, English, Life Orientation, Mathematics, Life Science and Accounting.
Ntombifihlakalo Twala lived up to the expectations of her educators at her school by working hard midst the global coronavirus pandemic, which she and her fellow matriculants had to navigate around.
“It was a very challenging, but interesting, year. When the lockdown happened it came with lots of challenges such as a lack of resources, loss of motivation and the debate of whether the schools will reopen at all,” says Twala.
She further adds that the debate of schools reopening created more confusion and uncertainty.
Twala however remained resilient during the pandemic and credits this as a motivational factor in achieving the excellent results in her final examinations.
“To be honest, with the confusion I experienced there was a two-week-period when I did not study. But being goal-driven and determined, I realized that I had to take responsibility for my future.”
The coronavirus pandemic proved to be a driving force for Twala to do her best and achieve her goals.
Her advice to the class of 2021 is to use past papers and to work hard throughout the year.
“Do not be afraid to ask for help and do not blame, complain and make excuses. Keep pushing! Remain positive and take breaks when you need to.”
Twala says preparing for times of mental hardship and speaking to someone you trust helps in ultimately achieving your goals.
“Most of all do not forget to enjoy the final year at school, it is just another year. The only difference is that the spotlight is on you for the whole year.”
Twala will be heading to the University of Cape Town where she will embark on her journey of completing her degree in medicine.
