Ashton’s ever-popular Zolani Youth Choir will share the stage with singer Luna Paige at this year’s Woordfees in Stellenbosch.
Luna’s one-night-only show includes brand-new songs that toy with the theme of “aloneness”. She explores the highs and lows of being alone, the things we do to avoid being alone and shares inspirational songs about the value of being alone once in a while.
She also finds inspiration in poems by Antjie Krog and Jeanne Goosen, and reworks these poems into beautiful pieces of music. She is joined on stage by a team of exemplary musicians – familiar faces at Woordfees – Frank Freeman on guitar, Schalk Joubert on bass and drummer Jonno Sweetman.
The highlight of the show promises to be the long-awaited collaboration among Paige, composer and choir arranger Franco Prinsloo and the Zolani Youth Choir.
Paige met the choir leader Odwa Mvunge many years ago. After meeting and sharing the stage with Franco Prinsloo at Woordfees 2022 and reconnecting with the Zolani Youth Choir at the Montagu Art Deco Festival earlier this year (2023) she decided the time was right to invite this community youth choir to join her on stage.
“I would like to inspire people with these beautiful songs and performances,” she said. “I want to show we are together in our aloneness, that we can motivate one another to use our alone time to practise staying true to ourselves, to keep growing and learn to accept and love ourselves so we can invite healthy and meaningful relationships into our lives. Working with these talented young people has reminded me how important music is, how it transcends perceived boundaries and mysteriously moves people, changing minds, perceptions and touches the hearts of people in the most profound ways.”
The show takes place on Sunday 8 October at 20:30 at the Drostdy Theatre, Stellenbosch. Tickets cost R185 per person and can be purchased via Quicket.Ticket link: www.quicket.co.za/events/223526-saam-alleen/#/
